Co-op staff transform Co-op Academy Clarice Cliff’s sensory garden
On 31st May, a group of volunteers from Co-op’s Procurement Team transformed Co-op Academy Clarice Cliff’s garden and polytunnel!
The primary has been in need of a garden update for some time, and now thanks to Co-op’s volunteers, the secret garden has had a new lease of life, making it the perfect outdoor classroom for children to explore.
Children can now plant and grow their own fruits, vegetables and flowers with the hope of selling these back to the local community at a reduced cost. The sustainable, sensory garden and wildlife corner will not only raise environmental awareness, but will also provide a safe place for children with additional needs to unwind. The garden will serve as a calm place away from the noise at lunch and break times for those who need it.
The project was supported by Councillor Aumir who donated £500 to cover costs of paint and gardening equipment, as well as Westland who donated a pallet of compost. The school is also expecting a generous donation of a garden bench, grow your own kits, plants and compost from the Co-op’s Engagement Team.
Lauren Kyle, one of the volunteers, said:
“Academy volunteering is definitely something that should be done by every Co-op team, as it’s a great opportunity to understand the academies, help improve the experience for the students, give back to the community and bond as a team.”

“Thank you to all the volunteers for transforming our sensory garden. They worked tirelessly to make it a calm, bright and peaceful area - the area has been transformed. The children have been to have a look around and are so excited by it and we know that it will make such a difference to all of our pupils.”

“We are so grateful to the volunteers for sparing some time to help us out, and to all the generous donations we have received. The garden looks amazing and we couldn’t have done it without them. I can’t wait to add the finishing touches, so the children can start to use our amazing new areas.”
