Co-op Academy Priesthorpe has launched a Community Fridge

Co-op Academy Priesthorpe has opened a Community Fridge with the support of the Co-op and environmental charity, Hubbub.

Co-op Academy Priesthorpe has opened a Community Fridge with the support of the Co-op and environmental charity, Hubbub.

A Community Fridge is a space for the local community to come together and share food resources. The community can bring surplus food that might otherwise have gone to waste.

Fridges help address social isolation and provide locals with access to fresh food, whilst saving money. It’s a great solution to help eliminate food waste from supermarkets or kitchen cupboards and redistribute this to local families!

With over 300 fridges across the UK, Hubbub has partnered with the Co-op to fund an additional 500 fridges by 2024. This is the second fridge to open at a school in Co-op Academies Trust, after a successful launch of their first fridge at Co-op Academy Failsworth.

Headteacher, Martin Blacoe, said:

“We are delighted to open our Community Fridge. It’s a great way of connecting with our community, promoting the importance of reducing food waste.”

Dr Chris Tomlinson, CEO of Co-op Academies Trust, said:

“Partnering with Hubbub and the Co-op to bring the community together and create fairer access to food is fantastic. After a successful launch of the first fridge at Co-op Academy Failsworth, we’re thrilled to launch the second in our Trust. It will be a community-led food solution to help support those that need it.“
