Year 9 Art Exhibition 2025

This week, seven secondary academies took part in a brand-new art exhibition showcasing the artistic talents of students from across the Trust.

The exhibition was the idea of ambitious secondary Art trainee teachers Jane Beaumont from Co-op Academy North Manchester and Bronwyn Lane from Co-op Academy Belle Vue who together engaged Year 9 students from across the Trust in a meaningful exploration on the theme of Belonging

Inspired by Tahera Aziz’s powerful Creative Sparks exhibition, both teachers were compelled to address issues of identity and inclusivity within their teaching with the view to hold a Trust-wide exhibition.

Throughout this project, which began in the autumn term, students have been reflecting on their experiences and perspectives to create artwork that mirrors the diverse communities we proudly serve.

Schools were asked to choose five pieces of artwork to feature in the exhibition which was on display in the atrium of One Angel Square, Manchester, from Tuesday, 21 to Friday, 24 January. Co-op colleagues were invited to vote for their favourite pieces using a provided QR code.

The art exhibition received more than 200 votes from colleagues from across the Trust who were also provided with virtual access to the exhibition and asked to vote for their favourite pieces.

The results were shared at a special event on the final day of the exhibition, attended by artist and guest judge Dan Callaghan. He said: “Visiting the Co-op Academies Trust Art Exhibition and seeing the creativity on display from the students was incredible.

“At such a young age the students were able to capture ideas with illustrations that I couldn't even imagine. They have bright futures ahead of them and some could already be selling their artwork online from what I’ve seen!”

Jane Beaumont said: “We are proud of the effort and enthusiasm shown by all the students and are thrilled at the success of this event. We look forward to building on this experience and hopefully hosting the competition yearly. We wish to continue fostering creativity, collaboration and a shared sense of belonging across the trust."

Bronwyn Lane added: “Art has such a powerful role to play in encouraging conversations and this exhibition has given our students a platform to reflect on their own experiences. Their work has been truly inspiring and we’re so proud of everyone who has taken part.”
