Co-op Academy Florence MacWilliams celebrates milestone

Construction of Co-op Academy Florence MacWilliams is progressing rapidly as a major phase is reached.

On October 8, the site began the installation of the steel frame that will form the backbone of the Meir-based academy which is set to be completed by September 2025.

To mark the occasion, a steel-signing ceremony took place, attended by Dr. Chris Tomlinson, CEO of Co-op Academies Trust, Headteacher Elizabeth Clewlow, Chair of Governors Pauline Smith and main contractors Bowmer + Kirkland.

Pupils Daisy, Bailey, Florence and Aahil from the founding Year 7 cohort were also in attendance and were invited to sign their names on the lift shaft immortalising their involvement in the project. The three-storey facility will house modern teaching spaces, specialist science labs, a dining hall, theatre and offices, all designed to meet the academy’s net zero sustainability targets.

Bowmer + Kirkland Project Manager, Dejan Stojsavljevic, said: “Today is a great day for all of the project team but also for Co-op Academy Florence MacWilliams and the wider community. Installation of the steel frame will mean that the school will start to take shape, marking an exciting milestone in the construction journey.”

Since opening its doors to 120 Year 7 students in September 2024, Co-op Academy Florence MacWilliams has quickly established itself as the top preference for secondary school places in Stoke-on-Trent for 2025, ahead of 14 other schools in the area. While construction continues, the academy operates from a temporary building, already proving to be a popular and successful choice for local families.

In addition to expanding educational opportunities, the new school will bring lasting benefits to the community. A permanent pedestrian crossing will replace the current temporary setup, improving safety for students and residents. Purpose-built public rights of way will replace worn paths around the school, and the academy will offer community sports facilities through lettings, providing much-needed space for local groups.

"Reaching this milestone moment and celebrating it with key staff and students from our founding cohort was really special.
“The building work is progressing at pace and we are looking forward to welcoming new starters in September 2025.”

Elizabeth Clewlow - Headteacher

"Co-op Academy Florence MacWilliams has made a very positive impact in its first few weeks, and this milestone reflects the dedication and vision of everyone behind the project. The overwhelming response from families, with so many selecting us as their top choice for 2025, highlights the success of our founding Year 7 cohort and the hard work of our staff."

"Our new school building not only supports our sustainability goals but also ensures that we continue to provide exceptional learning environments for our students, along with vital community facilities that will benefit future generations."

Dr. Chris Tomlinson, CEO of Co-op Academies Trust
