Singer-songwriter, Tom Walker, visits Co-op Academy Medlock!

Primary children at Co-op Academy Medlock had a special visit from singer-songwriter, Tom Walker!

The performance, held at the school on 26 April, came about due to Medlock’s work with Grange Park Opera. Their Primary Robins project was inspired by the history of music in British schools:

“Fifty years ago, every primary school had children sitting around a piano learning songs. In 2013, Primary Robins was introduced to four Hampshire schools, giving 430 Robins a weekly half-hour singing class.”

Today, there are over 6000 Robins across the country, including Co-op Academy Medlock’s very own pupils. During the past 3 years, over 400 pupils have taken part in weekly singing tuition with a trained vocalist. Year 2 and 3 having been working alongside professional musician, Eleanor, to learn a number of traditional songs to help enrich their music curriculum.

Music plays a key role in providing young people with a rounded education, not only for brain development, but also to spark joy and a love of the arts!
